The problem is Steinbeck's damn book. Everyone in this room understands the impact the Okie image is having on our state. Our people need to stop being so gol-darn apologetic about where they live. [Lloyd Noble, OU Board of Regents meeting, 1946]

Although still felt today, perhaps the impact of Steinbeck's book is far less direct than it was in the 1940s. What is more relevant in this statement by Lloyd Noble is the apologetic tendency of Oklahomans. In general we seem to carry about a serious inferiority complex about our state.
